![]() The model is a 'Drive Station Velocity HD-LXU3. I'm using a Buffalo 2 TB, USB 3.0 external hard drive, which is 7,200rpm. I save and load the audio files onto the external hard disk, so I thought this was being used for the read/write. I am using Garage Band so can't find the location dialogue box. The 'read' speed can get up to 5-6 mbps but on one occasion it got to 7mb before the error happened. Disk shows a big blue 'read' spike when the error happens sometimes, other times it seems fine.Memory pressure is showing green, occasionally going yellow - it is saying approx 5.5-6 gig is used, with cache files of about 1.5 - 2 gig and a swap file of between 500 and 800 mb.CPU seems fine - it is showing approx 60% idle at all times.Running the Activity Monitor on playback when the error happens gets these approximate results: It mostly happens when additional recorded parts or instruments come into the arrangement. Sometimes the error says 'disk error', sometimes 'system overload'. It seems to be a combination or variety of different issues. I believe you can put your sample files a external drive. For your Virtual instrument drive this is were I recommend a SSD because it will load the files much faster, but a 7200 will also work. This also could be your issue, what is the model of the usb drive your using? A 7200 speed audio drive is capable of around 65-100 tracks of audio files. You also have to be careful with "the seek time" as not all usb 3.0 will work for audio. The audio or VI drives needs to be at least 7200 speed and if external have a usb 3.0 or faster connection. The main os drive is fine at 5400, a ssd upgrade there will have no effect on the logic performance except a faster start up. One for the os, audio files and virtual instruments. Have you set up Logic to record/play your files with the external drive in the location dialog box? Recording studios should have a three drive system. Your issue could be cpu or drive related, hard to tell unless you open the activity monitor when you get the error. ![]()
